Cloudbook - Day 3 and 4
by Chris on Feb.24, 2008, under Tech
So I’m combining a post here from day 3 and 4 of my experiences with the Coudbook. I have to admit I did something really bad. I couldn’t resist really. I tried to have my cake and eat it too, but after a few hours of repartitioning and installing off of a couple of super slow USB thumb drives, I decided to put Windows XP on the Cloudbook to see what it could do in that arena. There were a few requests on the cloudbooker.com forums to get some games running. I happened to have a copy of Grand Theft Auto:Vice City here, so I loaded it up. Here’s a few videos of the results of that:

You just made many future cloudbookers happy with the videos. Thanks and good luck. And I believe what you shared goes against what the spokesperson from Everex said about the machines capabilities.

My mistake, it was Halo. Paul Kim wrote to Barlow: “Sorry to tell you this but Halo won’t work on the CloudBook/gOS or XP because of the lack of driver support. We’re thinking about using a 945GSEchipset later in the year. If you’re still in the market for a UMPC then, hope you will keep us in mind. Regards,Paul”

Some questions:
1) How’s the build quality?
2) Do the keys rattle or shift at all?
3) Does the plastic feel cheap?
4) Are those thin hinges good?
5) Can you plug it into a desktop and have the HD show up as a drive?
6) How did you install XP? I don’t have an external CD drive and was wondering if there was some way to load it by plugging it into the desktop and using the desktop’s CD drive. (I might have to wait for someone to work that out, if possible, and post detailed instructions for an eejit like me.)
7) Did installing XP get rid of the WiFi drop problems gOS had?
You’re the Go-To Guy right now! Thanks for your efforts!

You are my hero! I will be sending back this low-memory EEE and getting my money back. I hope Wal-mart is still selling Cloudbooks by then :).

Very nice review! To help out with Barlow’s request, I think this might interest you:

I don’t know if this is the one he’s taking about, but there’s a free trial on it, and the specs seem about the same as vice city.

Has anyone installed and tried to see if Alien Arena is playable on the cloudbook. If it is I am for sure going to buy one.
